So when trying to post our African itinerary just now, I ran into an ugly error… the database on my ISP was full. I doubt if my few hundred blog posts have done that and so my suspicions have turned to the thousands of comment spams I’ve picked up.

Ideally I’d like to keep comments available, especially for the upcoming trip, but it’s not clear if I can solve the general problem in the next two weeks. A couple of options are obvious:

  • Dump the ISP and move to Typepad for blogging (long-term I’ll do this but not likely for now)

  • Add more database space for this to happen (need to drop and recreate tables for this to take effect, and I don’t want to deal with backups etc. right now)

  • Turn off comments altogether (not sure how much code I’d need to change to do this

  • Delete enough comment spam to free enough space for the trip

I’ll probably do the last one and see what happens. I just made a few config changes that may help as well… we’ll see.

UPDATE: the comment spammers filled up the DB again and I leave for Africa tomorrow… no time to fix, so turning off comments for now (and hoping the option works).
