…from the last 24 hours in South Africa

  • My mantra, repeated continuously whilst driving here: “Drive on the left, Drive on the left, Drive on the left”
  • An important corollary to the above is “I’m sitting on the right” so that I override the muscle memory trying to gauge my distance from parked cars by where my left arm is
  • National car rental “lost” my booking (despite a confirmation number), Hertz/Avis/Budget were all out of cars, so I ended up with a Daihatsu Charade last night at about 12:30 AM. It’s appropriately named, as it apparently is trying to get people to somehow guess that it’s really a car. It’s about the size of my left leg and feels like driving a go-kart. I seriously don’t remember the last time I drove something that had four wheels but no power steering.
  • I spent about 45 minutes last night getting lost in Cape Town at about 1:00 AM trying to find my hotel, which is the single best way to learn how to navigate a city… zen state of mind due to sleep deprivation, high motivation to figure it out, and a lack of other drivers to collide with
